I am a designer / writer / analyst hybrid know variously as an information architect, an interface designer or an interaction designer. Under any of these titles my work is the same: to make digital information and tasks meaningful and useful to the people who need them.
I have 11 years of experience designing interactive systems. My training includes an undergraduate degree in the social sciences, and graduate level work in both graphic design and creative writing. I work on large projects for large organizations, corporations, and government agencies; and I work on small projects for small businesses, artists, and non-profits.
I am …
… an information designer. I design screen layouts, user flows, navigation schemes, taxonomies, and full visual interfaces for entering, exploring, retrieving and analyzing data. This is my main show, my specialty. But in the course of this work I am also ...
… a technologist. I participate in discussions on system logic. I handcode most of my deliverables, including interactive wireframes, HTML prototypes, and production-ready HTML templates. I mentor in and advocate for Web standards. I dabble in AJAX. I stretch my brain and my patience coding content management systems in Drupal and Expression Engine. And in the course of this, I am also ...
… a business person. Thirty percent of my work in the last 11 years has been through
my own studio,
ding! interaction design. There, in addition to consulting on and performing
information architecture and User Centered Design, I write proposals, develop project
schedules, hire and manage subcontractors, and make good friends with my clients.
